Mr. Tillman founded Tillman & Associates, LLC in 1991 and represents individuals in civil litigation primarily in the areas of Worker’s Compensation, Social Security Disability and Personal Injury litigation. He has represented individuals in general tort liability cases involving automobile and premises liability as well as in Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home negligence actions in both State and Federal Courts.
Mr. Tillman represents clients throughout the entire State of Georgia. Prior to 1991, Mr. Tillman practiced exclusively in the area of Insurance Defense litigation concentrating in these same areas as well as in the specialized area of Arson Defense. His years in the defense practice were spent with the Atlanta firm of Bovis, Kyle, Burch & Medlin, LLC.
Mediation and Arbitration
Mr. Tillman has been a certified Mediator and Arbitrator since 2007. In 2008, he founded the mediation/arbitration firm, Mediated Dispute Resolutions, LLC (MDR) which is now Mediated Resolutions, LLC. In over 35 years of practice, Mr. Tillman has participated in many mediations, most of which reached resolution of the cases involved. In his years as a certified neutral he has conducted hundreds of mediations with a very high percentage success rate. He serves as a neutral throughout the State with an emphasis in the area of Workers’ Compensation and personal injury litigation.
Burt’s philosophy has always been to facilitate dialogue and communication between the parties of a dispute with the goal of having all concerns and objectives of the respective parties spoken and heard. Mr. Tillman facilitates the goal that all parties listen with an open mind and practical approach to a solution, thereby paving the way to an equitable and mutually agreeable resolution of the underlying dispute.
Professional Affiliations and Positions
Mr. Tillman has served as board member, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Bar Association Worker’s Compensation Section. He is a member of the Georgia Bar Association and The Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and its WCCL section for those practitioners representing workers injured in work related accidents. He is also a member of the American Association for Justice, formerly ATLA.
Mr. Tillman has been a featured presenter and speaker at the annual seminar sponsored by the State Worker’s Compensation Institute at St. Simons Island, Georgia on multiple occasions as well as at other continuing legal education seminars throughout the State. He has also been a featured speaker and presenter at seminars hosted by the Atlanta Claims Association, an organization of insurance industry representatives and adjusters and the attorneys who represent them.
He has been an active contributor and volunteer for Kids’ Chance, an organization sponsoring college scholarships for children whose parents have been catastrophically injured or killed in work related accidents. He is a supporter and volunteer for the Atlanta Boy Choir and served as Chairman of its Board of Directors. He has also served as a Board member of Atlanta’s Project Open Hand, a meals on wheels service for the elderly and chronically ill. He is a current member of the Lowndes County Historical Society in Valdosta, Georgia, his home town.
Mr. Tillman was born and raised in Valdosta, Georgia, and graduated from Valdosta High School. He attended and graduated from Emory University with a B.A. in Psychology. He attended the University of Georgia School of Law graduating with a J. D. in 1979. There he was chairman of the Moot Court Board and oversaw competition of the school’s appellate advocates program. His father was the founding partner of the Valdosta law firm of Tillman, McTier, Coleman, Talley and Newbern, (now, Coleman-Talley) where he began his practice.
